The Bar Council of Gujarat is an Autonomous Statutory Body established under the Advocates Act, 1961. With a wide range of powers and functions, it is responsible for the administration and welfare of advocates in Gujarat. The council carries out its duties in accordance with the Advocates Act, 1961, Gujarat Advocates’ Welfare Fund Act, 1991, and the rules set by the Bar Council of India.

The Bar Council of Gujarat undertakes various activities to fulfill its functions, such as admitting advocates to its roll, maintaining the roll, addressing cases of misconduct, safeguarding the rights and interests of advocates, and promoting the growth of Bar Associations. They also work to support law reform, organize legal aid for the needy, manage funds, conduct seminars and talks on legal topics, and publish journals of legal interest. Additionally, the Bar Council of Gujarat provides financial assistance to welfare schemes, legal aid and advice, and establishes law libraries.

They have distributed funds to the families of deceased advocates and aid to those suffering from serious ailments. The council publishes the 'Gujarat Law Herald' (GLH), a law journal that reports landmark judgments from the High Court of Gujarat and the Supreme Court. Furthermore, they offer an e-library software and distribute complimentary law books and journals to registered bar associations in Gujarat.
