Barrett's Pathology Working Group (BPWG) is an international consortium dedicated to advancing the understanding and diagnosis of Barrett's oesophagus and its associated neoplasias. Comprised of 53 pathologists from 20 countries across five continents, BPWG aims to harmonize histopathological diagnostics that remain contentious within the gastro-intestinal pathology community. Recognizing the critical need for standardized diagnostic criteria, BPWG is committed to developing international guidelines and educating healthcare professionals on Barrett's pathology.
The group's current initiative, the Barrett's Molecular Expert Consensus study, addresses the complexities of diagnosing Barrett's esophagus (BE), particularly in cases of dysplasia. The study aims to analyze the histopathological spectrum of BE and assess the relevance of genomic complexity in predicting diagnostic outcomes. By fostering collaboration among pathologists and promoting advanced research, BPWG seeks to improve patient care and outcomes for those at risk of oesophageal adenocarcinoma. Through its efforts, BPWG hopes to unify diagnostic interpretations and elevate the standards of Barrett's pathology globally.
