Base One Europe Association is a constituted voluntary organisation dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of the US Navy and Marines in Derry during the Second World War. Its work centres on the naval installation known by the code name “Base One Europe,” officially commissioned as US Naval Operating Base Londonderry on 5 February 1942. Established along the Foyle, the base was spread across seven sites in the Foyle Valley and served as the US Navy’s main centre of operations in Europe until after the Normandy landings in June 1944.
Through its website, the Association tells the story of the Bluejackets, Seabees and Marines who were based in Derry, as well as the physical, cultural and personal imprints they left behind. Visitors can explore historical information and a gallery, find details about events, read news and learn how to get involved. The site also includes a shop and opportunities to follow the Association’s updates on social media.
