松山野球拳おどり is a vibrant cultural festival held in Matsuyama, Ehime, celebrating the traditional dance known as "Yakyuken." Originating in the Taisho era, this beloved event has thrived through the Showa, Heisei, and Reiwa periods, highlighting the area's deep-rooted passion for baseball which was significantly influenced by Matsuyama-born haiku poet Shiki Masaoka. The festival features diverse performances by corporate teams, children’s groups, and various organizations, all adorned in visually stunning costumes that reflect baseball themes.
Participants engage in the unique dance routine, characterized by rhythmic phrases from baseball culture. The festivities take place across four distinct venues, including the lively Daitamachi and Chifunemachi, as well as the picturesque Horinouchi park with Matsuyama Castle as a backdrop. With music ranging from traditional folk tunes to modern rock and samba, the Matsuyama Yakyuken Odori promises an exciting experience where creativity meets heritage, inviting everyone to join in celebration from August 8 to 10, 2025, for its milestone 60th edition.
