About Bashkirtseff
The Marie Bashkirtseff Diary project makes the complete, unabridged diary of Ukrainian artist and writer Marie Bashkirtseff (1858–1884) freely accessible online. Written from the age of thirteen until her death from tuberculosis, the diary offers a remarkable record of nineteenth-century life, art, and female ambition. For generations, readers had access mainly to a heavily censored version; this project presents the full text alongside resources that help readers understand its historical and linguistic context.
Visitors can read the original French diary, including the mixture of languages Bashkirtseff used, and explore translations in Ukrainian, Czech, English, and modern French. The site organizes entries into volumes and notebooks, with dated selections such as “This Day in Marie’s Life” introducing individual entries. Supporting materials include historical research, annotations, linguistic notes, and a glossary of people and places. The project also shares information about Bashkirtseff and her paintings, and invites contributions to its translations. Its aim is to make this important personal document accessible as both a historical source and a literary work.
