BasicSwap is an open-source, decentralized exchange protocol for peer-to-peer trading across blockchains. It enables users to swap Bitcoin, Monero, and 12 other supported coins directly, without a custodian, account, or protocol fee. Trades settle on-chain through atomic swaps, which use cryptographic mechanisms to ensure both sides complete together or the coins return to their owners.
Users can access BasicSwap through desktop software or mobile wallets that have integrated the protocol. The desktop client runs the protocol locally, while optional light-node support lets users read blockchain data through public Electrum nodes without running a full daemon or waiting for a complete sync. Traders can post or accept offers through a distributed order book, shared via encrypted peer-to-peer messaging.
BasicSwap is designed to keep users in control of their keys and funds throughout each trade. It does not operate a central matcher or hold deposits; users pay only the underlying network transaction costs. Privacy features include encrypted messaging and optional Tor use.
