Basilica di San Clemente is a church and archaeological landmark in Rome, located on Via Labicana, a short walk from the Colosseum. It brings together layers of the city’s history, art and Christian faith in one remarkable complex. Visitors can explore the present 12th-century basilica, featuring a mosaic, early Renaissance frescoes, a marble chancel from an earlier church and a Cosmatesque floor.
Below it, the excavations reveal a 4th-century church with medieval frescoes dating from the 8th to 11th centuries, as well as a 1st-century area containing a Mithraic temple and the remains of a large public building. The basilica is also a place of prayer, where visitors venerate the martyrs Clement of Rome and Ignatius of Antioch, and visit the tomb and relics of Saint Cyril. The site provides information on opening hours, visits and Mass times, accepts bookings for entry to the excavations, and offers a virtual tour for those wishing to explore its history remotely
