BASIN Alliance

BASIN Alliance is an interagency partnership based in Alamogordo, New Mexico, bringing public lands, sovereign tribal lands, and local communities together across the Tularosa Basin. Its purpose is to connect the region’s cultural heritage, science, and distinctive landscapes while helping residents and visitors understand the area as one shared place. BASIN supports coordinated storytelling, collective stewardship, and shared capacity among its partners.

Through regional stories, it highlights thousands of years of living history, including fossil footprints, Apache traditions, Smokey Bear, and space milestones. Its visitor resources include interactive maps, curated scenic driving tours, and information about trails and desert landscapes. The alliance also promotes community events such as sunset walks, dark-sky star parties, cultural celebrations, and seasonal activities.

Its stewardship work supports wildlife corridors, desert ecosystem conservation, collaborative grants, volunteer coordination, staff training, and shared equipment. BASIN is also advancing community, education, and adaptive-reuse opportunities for the historic Sunspot Solar Observatory. Organizations and community members can participate through its steering committee, advisory roundtable, and volunteer opportunities
