Bayworld is a museum and visitor attraction in Nelson Mandela Bay, located on Port Elizabeth’s beachfront. Bringing together natural and cultural history, the complex offers educational experiences for visitors of all ages and supports greater awareness of South Africa’s heritage and conservation needs. Its research and education programmes focus on marine life, reptiles, maritime history and local history.
Visitors can explore the Port Elizabeth Museum, which combines natural and cultural history and is described as South Africa’s third-oldest museum. Exhibitions include the Dinosaur Hall, Maritime History Hall, Xhosa Corner and Costume Hall. No. 7 Castle Hill offers a house museum in a historic Victorian home, while the Snake Park features reptiles, including species indigenous to the Bay area. The Oceanarium has presented marine mammals from Algoa Bay, but is currently closed to the public during redevelopment and animal relocation.
Bayworld also provides educational programmes, school visits and outreach activities through its partnership with the Port Elizabeth Museum School. Venue hire is available for bookings.
