About BIG BANG ASTRONOMY CLUB
Big Bang Astronomy Club is an amateur astronomy club based in Rajkot, Gujarat, India. It operates as a unit of the Saurashtra Education Foundation’s Shri O. V. Sheth Regional Community Science Center and describes itself as one of the country’s largest amateur astronomy clubs. The club brings people together to explore the night sky and offers astronomy outreach programs across Gujarat, from the Gir forests to the Rann of Kutch. Its work was featured by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the 134th episode of Mann Ki Baat on 31 May 2026.
The club’s flagship activities include the Gir Star Party, a three-day, two-night annual event held in late January or early February near Gir Forest. It combines daytime lectures and workshops with nighttime sky-watching beneath dark skies. The annual Messier Marathon, usually held near the new moon in late March or early April, gives participants the opportunity to observe all 110 objects in the Messier Catalog in one night. Beyond astronomy, the club also organizes nature walks and treks.
