About bcMeter
Its optical absorption photometer is designed to make soot measurement more accessible, addressing the high cost and limited availability of monitoring sites. The monitor has been validated through independent laboratory and co-location studies against professional instruments, with reported correlations varying by study and reference device.
The Raspberry Pi-based bcMeter (DIY) is the project’s build-it-yourself version. Its design files, firmware, and schematics are available for private, educational, and research use under a CC BY-NC 4.0 license, along with downloads, an assembly wiki, and a user manual. A browser-based local dashboard displays live black carbon, PM2.5, temperature, and humidity readings, and supports charts and data export. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi, with optional 4G/LTE, GPS, and PM2.5/PM10 sensing.
The project also provides technical inquiries, support, validation resources, and opportunities for research collaboration. Assembled Kit and Complete versions are described as under development and undergoing EU conformity assessment, not generally available.
