About BCRS Malta
BCRS Malta Ltd operates Malta’s Beverage Container Refund Scheme, a deposit-return system designed to encourage the recovery and recycling of single-use beverage containers. A refundable deposit of €0.10 is added to eligible drinks, passed through the supply chain to consumers, and repaid when an empty container is returned to an approved redemption location, such as a participating retailer or reverse vending machine. BCRS Malta manages the deposit account and coordinates the collection process. Returned containers are transported to the company’s clearing centre for sorting and onward sale as recyclable materials.
The scheme covers specified drinks, including water, soft drinks, beer and cider, ready-to-drink coffee, certain flavoured alcoholic beverages, and dilutables. Eligible container materials include PET plastic, steel, aluminium, and clear or non-clear glass. BCRS Malta also provides practical information and tools to help users participate, including a barcode checker, return-point finder, FAQs, and guidance for establishments. Through these services, the organisation supports a circular approach to beverage packaging by making container returns accessible and rewarding.
