Bee Genetics

Bee Genetics is a breeding initiative focused on helping honey bees develop natural resistance to Varroa mites and supporting more sustainable beekeeping in Australia. Its breeders work to strengthen locally adapted bee populations through early selection tools, including testing for hygienic behaviour. Bees with this trait can detect unhealthy brood, uncap it and remove it from the hive, helping colonies defend themselves against pests and disease.

As Varroa spreads, Bee Genetics is broadening its approach with mite population growth assessments and Varroa Sensitive Hygiene (VSH) testing. These methods help identify colonies with promising natural resistance, so suitable queens can be selected for breeding. The program also values gentleness, productivity and resilience to other common diseases, aiming to develop bees that are both robust and manageable.

The website shares project and news updates, offers hygienic testing and breeder access, and invites donations to support the breeding work. Visitors can also subscribe to a newsletter for updates and learn about the initiative’s partners and supporters.
