About Beirut Urban Lab
The Beirut Urban Lab is a collaborative and interdisciplinary research space that focuses on historical and contemporary urbanization. Anchored in the global south, this lab produces scholarship by documenting and analyzing transformation processes in Lebanon and its region's natural and built environments. By engaging in critical inquiry and research, they contribute to academic debates on urbanization.
The lab envisions an ecosystem of change that is fueled by committed urban citizens and collectives working towards just, inclusive, and viable cities. They produce impactful knowledge through scholarship, critical inquiry, and documentation, and advance design as an impact-oriented reflective practice. They also develop experimental methods and innovative tools of investigation, foster learning experiences through training and mentoring, and engage multiple publics by informing and influencing academic debates, policy making, and professional practice.
The Beirut Urban Lab builds on a legacy of urban research initiatives and collaborates with various stakeholders, including scholars, institutions, public agencies, activists, and local communities
