BelGIM maintains national measurement standards and provides access to reference materials, technical documents, and information on measurement methods and instruments.

The institute offers a broad range of services, including verification and calibration of measuring instruments, high-precision measurements, metrological examination of documents, assessment of measurement methods, and audits and consultations. Its testing services cover instrument type approval, certification and technical testing, medical devices, radiation safety, packaged goods, and food and agricultural products. BelGIM also provides product, service, management-system, and personnel certification, as well as conformity declarations and proficiency-testing programs for laboratories. Additional activities include distributing metrology standards and publications, organizing conferences and seminars, and publishing the scientific and technical journal Metrology and Instrument-Making.
