Bellator MMA was a major mixed martial arts promotion founded in 2008 and headquartered in Newport Beach, California. Its name comes from the Latin word for “warrior,” reflecting a brand built around elite competition and high-stakes fights. Beginning with its first event in 2009, Bellator staged more than 300 events and expanded internationally, reaching audiences in more than 140 countries through changing broadcast and streaming partnerships.
The promotion became especially known for its tournament format, in which fighters competed through elimination brackets to earn title opportunities. This approach helped establish Bellator as a proving ground for emerging talent and a stage for established stars. Across nine weight divisions, it crowned champions and hosted memorable rivalries featuring fighters such as Patricio “Pitbull” Freire, Michael Chandler, Eddie Alvarez, Fedor Emelianenko, Cris Cyborg, and Ryan Bader.
Over its history, Bellator evolved its event and media offerings while maintaining a focus on dramatic fights and competitive merit. It operated until early 2025, when its roster was absorbed into the Professional Fighters League.
