The Benguela Current Convention (BCC) is a multi-sectoral intergovernmental organisation established by Angola, Namibia and South Africa. It promotes regional cooperation to conserve, protect, rehabilitate and enhance the Benguela Current Large Marine Ecosystem, while supporting its sustainable use. Through its programmes and projects, the BCC works across ocean governance, marine planning, environmental management and climate resilience.
Its initiatives include the BCLME III project, implemented by the BCC Secretariat in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme to improve ocean governance. The Climate Change Project aims to strengthen resilience and reduce climate vulnerability in marine fisheries and mariculture, helping support food and livelihood security. MARISMA, the Marine Spatial Management and Governance Programme, advances sustainable ocean use through marine spatial planning, which guides where and when activities take place at sea.
The organisation also provides information and resources, including research publications, media releases, training and capacity-development activities, ecosystem advice, and data services.
