BEPPO is a Germany-wide healthcare and research project investigating how structured exercise therapy can support children and adolescents during acute cancer treatment. Funded by the Innovation Fund, the study brings together 13 paediatric oncology centres to evaluate an individually guided programme combining movement therapy, telemedicine and family-focused advice.
The programme has three components: supervised, age-appropriate exercise sessions in hospital wards or outpatient clinics; video-based therapy at home, adapted to each participant’s treatment phase and energy level; and counselling to help families encourage safe, sustainable physical activity in everyday life. The project examines whether these approaches can help address concerns associated with inactivity, such as reduced mobility, loss of strength and endurance, fatigue, and impacts on quality of life and social participation.
BEPPO uses a randomised controlled study design. After screening, information and initial assessments, participants are allocated to either the exercise programme, which lasts six months, or usual care. The project also evaluates clinical outcomes, care processes and economic aspects, while providing information and resources for families, therapists and clinics.
