The Susan and Charles Berghoff Foundation is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to advancing health and medical education and research, with a particular focus on Lewy Body Disease (LBD) and dementia. Inspired by co-founder Sue Berghoff’s experience with dementia, the foundation works to increase awareness, reduce stigma, and support progress for people and families affected by these conditions.
Its research funding supports physician-scientists at Stanford Medicine, UCSF Memory & Aging Center, UC Davis, and Brigham & Women’s Hospital. The foundation began funding dementia research at Stanford in 2020 through the Sue Berghoff LBD Research Fellowship and continues to back initiatives addressing dementia from multiple disciplines.
Education is another central part of its work. Programs include continuing medical education and continuing education training for doctors and nurses, dementia education for college students, and resources for caregivers. The foundation also shares information through events, news, a blog, podcasts, and educational materials. Its documentary, Sue’s Story: A Journey with Lewy Body Dementia, offers perspectives from Sue and medical experts to help inform clinicians, caregivers, and communities. Donations and grants help make this work possible.
