Berkeley Electric Cooperative is the largest electric cooperative in South Carolina, serving over 100,000 member-accounts in Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester counties. Established in 1940, they have a rich history that dates back to the 1930s when electricity started flowing across the land. At that time, rural areas were not being prioritized by electric utilities, so rural residents took matters into their own hands.

Coordinated by the County Agent's Office, six men formed Berkeley Electric Cooperative, convincing 600 people to pay the $5 membership fee to incorporate. Today, Berkeley Electric Cooperative is a not-for-profit, member-owned electric utility that adheres to the 7 Cooperative Principles. They operate on a cost-of-service basis, ensuring that the margins are given back to the members to reduce their electric costs.

As a member-owner, you have a voice in how the cooperative is operated and can participate in the annual meeting, where the board of trustees is elected.
