Bernie McGill is a Northern Irish author of novels and short fiction, born in Lavey, County Derry. She studied English and Italian at Queen’s University Belfast and holds a master’s degree in Irish Writing. Her work includes the novels The Watch House and The Butterfly Cabinet, and the short story collections Sleepwalkers and This Train is for Sleepwalkers.
Her writing has appeared in anthologies including The Long Gaze Back and The Glass Shore, as well as in publications such as The Irish Times. McGill’s short stories and essays have also been broadcast on BBC Radio 4 and BBC Radio 3. Her fiction has received significant recognition: This Train is for Sleepwalkers won the 2023 Edge Hill Short Story Prize, The Watch House was nominated for the 2019 Ireland/EU Prize for Literature, and she won the 2008 Zoetrope: All-Story Short Fiction Award.
