About Business Finance for the Poor in Bangladesh
Business Finance for the Poor in Bangladesh (BFP-B) is an innovative program aimed at creating economic opportunities for small businesses in Bangladesh. The program focuses on improving the policy and regulatory environment for financial institutions, encouraging private sector investment in expanding financial services, and enhancing the creditworthiness of small businesses. Small businesses are vital drivers of growth in Bangladesh, employing over half of the country's workforce and contributing to a quarter of GDP.
However, a large percentage of these businesses lack access to formal financial services, preventing them from reaching their full potential. BFP-B works to address this issue by providing credit for investments, facilitating digital payments, offering deposit accounts and digital wallets, and providing insurance to mitigate risk. By improving access to these essential financial services, BFP-B aims to support the growth and development of small businesses, ultimately benefiting the overall economy.
Managed by economic consultancy Nathan Associates London Ltd., BFP-B is a partnership between DFID Bangladesh and the Government of Bangladesh. The program collaborates with various stakeholders to generate evidence, implement regulatory changes, and catalyze private sector investment. Through its efforts, BFP-B is creating opportunities for small businesses across the country, promoting economic growth, and empowering local entrepreneurs
