BIE

The British Institute of Embalmers (BIE) is a membership organisation supporting professional embalmers since its founding in 1927. Established by funeral directors to represent the distinct profession of embalming, the Institute works to uphold members’ professional standing and promote high standards in the art and science of caring for the deceased. Its members are trained through a structured education and examination system, and qualified members may use the designations MBIE or FBIE.

The BIE provides education and professional development for prospective and current embalming professionals. Its services include approved training courses delivered by accredited tutors, entrance testing, theoretical and practical examinations, and a route to apply for membership. The Institute also offers course information, tutor listings, membership guidance, and resources explaining embalming and professional ethics. Through lectures, tuition, examinations, and certificates, it encourages improved methods of preservation, disinfection, and sanitation. The organisation is overseen by elected committees and serves members through geographical divisions in the UK and internationally, including Australasian and North American divisions.
