Big Sky Packer and Guide School prepares people for careers in hunting and outdoor recreation through practical, hands-on instruction. Run by a full-time outfitting business with more than 18 years of experience, the school draws students from across the country and teaches skills grounded in the needs of working outfitters. Training can lead to roles in guiding, packing, cooking, wrangling and other outdoor pursuits. The school reports that 98% of its students complete the course and says it supports graduates with job placement assistance. Alumni have gone on to become head guides, foremen, business partners and business owners.
The school also offers a precision shooting program hosted with Elk Creek Outfitting and Article 4 Rifleworks. This course covers rifle and optic setup, marksmanship, ballistics, wind reading, ammunition validation and field shooting, along with gear selection, backpack fitting, route finding and hiking techniques. Participants practice in hunting-style conditions, including live-fire scenarios. Other learning opportunities include buffalo harvest instruction focused on skinning, cutting and meat care.
