The BIND Association is a research-focused organisation dedicated to improving understanding of brain involvement in Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy (DMD and BMD). Established after the EU-funded BIND project concluded, the association aims to sustain progress in characterising and diagnosing the neurological and cognitive effects associated with these rare inherited conditions. DMD and BMD are caused by mutations in the DMD gene, which affects production of the dystrophin protein; both can involve progressive muscle weakness, and brain function may also be affected.
The original BIND project brought together 19 partners from Europe and Japan, making it the first project of its scale focused on brain involvement in dystrophinopathies. The association promotes research and the development of better approaches to addressing related learning, behavioural, and other cognitive challenges. Its website shares information about DMD and BMD, research findings, publications, participating centres, data access, and innovations. It also provides news and a Dystrophinopathy Research Digest, highlights the BIND Screener, and offers updates on research opportunities and events.
