About Biodiversity
The Norwegian Biodiversity Information Centre (NBIC) is a pivotal institution established in 2005, dedicated to bridging the gap between biodiversity science and policy in Norway. Its primary mission is to provide comprehensive and up-to-date information on species and ecosystems, making biodiversity knowledge easily accessible to the public, policymakers, and researchers. NBIC collaborates with natural history museums, research institutions, and NGOs to consolidate and disseminate biodiversity data effectively.
Key offerings include the creation of the Norwegian Red Lists, which assess the risk of species and ecosystems, and the Species Map Service, providing access to species occurrence data across Norway. Additionally, NBIC spearheads citizen science initiatives for species observations and offers extensive resources for understanding ecosystem diversity.
With a strong emphasis on international cooperation, NBIC partners with organizations such as the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) and the Swedish Species Information Centre to enhance global biodiversity knowledge exchange and strengthen conservation efforts. Through these initiatives, NBIC plays a crucial role in safeguarding Norway's rich biodiversity.
