The Biodiversity Law Centre is a Southern African non-profit company, registered non-profit organisation and public benefit organisation focused on protecting and restoring biodiversity through law. Its team of activist lawyers works with communities and other civil society organisations to provide legal advice and support. The Centre’s purpose is to help safeguard ecosystems and indigenous species while supporting sustainable livelihoods across the region.
Its work includes partnering with organisations to address environmental threats and advance biodiversity protection. Current projects include efforts to protect Verlorenvlei, a wetland of international importance, and African Penguins affected by human activity. The Centre also engages with policy and legal processes, including commenting on the draft National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan and the National Water Act Amendment Bill, and appealing an environmental authorisation for a West Coast marine prospecting project.
