Biological Heritage is New Zealand's National Science Challenge, dedicated to protecting and managing the country's unique biodiversity, enhancing biosecurity, and strengthening resilience to harmful organisms. As our environment faces increasing biological pressures and climate change, the challenge strives to reverse the decline in New Zealand's biological heritage. They achieve this through three primary areas of focus: Empower (Whakamana), Protect (Tiaki), and Restore (Whakahou).

By forming national partnerships, fostering research innovation, leveraging cutting-edge technologies, and encouraging community and sector action, Biological Heritage aims to create tangible on-the-ground impacts. With a collective approach and collaboration between various stakeholders, including Māori, the challenge works towards long-term solutions to safeguard Aotearoa's biological heritage. As one of the 11 National Science Challenges funded by the Ministry for Business, Innovation and Employment, Biological Heritage prioritizes collaborative efforts and broad connections to effectively protect and preserve New Zealand's natural and production landscapes
