About BIOLAND-Cy
BIOLAND-Cy is a research project based at the Eratosthenes Centre of Excellence in Limassol, Cyprus, and funded by the Cyprus Research and Innovation Foundation. It explores ancient Cypriot landscapes by combining satellite Earth Observation with previously published evidence from human remains, stable isotopes, animal bones, and plant studies. The project does not conduct excavations or collect new samples; it digitally reassesses existing, open evidence alongside environmental data.
Across six archaeological sites and a 24-month programme, BIOLAND-Cy uses Sentinel-2 vegetation imagery, terrain and hydrology data, and Sentinel-1 radar to build environmental baselines. Its research outputs include a Resource Accessibility Index, an Activity Index modelling landscape use and movement, and harmonised geospatial datasets. These are brought together in the BIOLAND GeoHub, a QGIS-based decision-support platform with five thematic map groups. The project also provides FAIR datasets, open code, documentation, and peer-reviewed publications, supporting researchers and heritage managers with reproducible tools for studying Cyprus’s cultural landscapes.
