BioMeld is an EU-funded research project focused on the design and production of biohybrid machines (BHMs). Specifically, they are developing a biohybrid catheter capable of accessing hard-to-reach areas of the human body, making it a groundbreaking endeavor. The project proposes a biointelligent manufacturing pipeline, with BHMs that are self-monitoring and self-controlling.

The addition of bio-intelligent production aspects through self-adapting communication among manufacturing cells will continuously optimize production. The objectives of BioMeld include developing a modeling and simulation framework for the digital design of BHMs, fabricating BHM-based modules for a reconfigurable modular catheter, validating the framework through comparison with manufactured devices, and constructing a demonstration bio-intelligent manufacturing cell. The project requires collaboration across various disciplines, such as medicine, biology, mathematics, computing, chemistry, and materials science.

Successful completion of BioMeld will benefit biotechnology SMEs and manufacturers, provide contributions to the scientific community in biohybrid and soft robotics, and ultimately benefit patients and surgeons
