Biorescue

BioRescue is a groundbreaking conservation initiative dedicated to saving the critically endangered Northern White Rhino (NWR) from the brink of extinction. Established in response to the alarming decline of this subspecies, which was officially declared extinct in the wild in 2008, BioRescue combines advanced assisted reproductive technologies and stem cell techniques to develop innovative strategies for revival. With only three individuals remaining, the project employs cryopreserved gametes and skin samples to produce artificial gametes, aiming to sustain a genetically healthy population.

Supported by international scientists and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, BioRescue emphasizes the importance of collaboration among political, conservation, and public sectors to advocate for these majestic creatures. Beyond research and technology, the initiative engages in ethical risk analysis, ensuring comprehensive discussions around the implications of their methods. Through public support and donations, BioRescue aspires to reintroduce the Northern White Rhino to its natural habitat while addressing the complex social-ecological challenges involved in species conservation.
