The Julian Alps Biosphere Reserve is a UNESCO Man and the Biosphere (MAB) area in the mountainous region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, northeastern Italy. Established in June 2019 on the initiative of the Julian Prealps Regional Nature Park, it covers more than 700 square kilometres across 11 municipalities, from the Montasio and Canin mountains towards the northern edge of the Friulian plain. The reserve brings together exceptional biodiversity, natural habitats and landscapes with the region’s Latin and Slavic cultural heritage.
Its work reflects the MAB programme’s aim of improving the relationship between people and nature by protecting biodiversity and ecosystems while supporting sustainable economic, social and environmental development. The reserve shares information about its territory, governance, action and communication plans, and sustainable tourism. It also promotes outdoor activities, local events and opportunities for young people, including Junior Rangers, a youth council and summer camps.
Through educational initiatives, cross-border cooperation and public activities, the reserve invites residents and visitors to discover and care for this distinctive mountain landscape
