About BioXFEL
BioXFEL is a National Science Foundation Science and Technology Center focused on using X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) to advance structural biology. Its researchers and collaborators use these powerful X-ray sources to investigate biological molecules, including their structures, dynamics, and functions. The center supports scientific projects and beamtime opportunities, shares research findings through publications and protein structure deposits, and highlights work in areas such as serial crystallography, cryo-electron microscopy, and time-resolved studies.
BioXFEL also provides education and professional-development opportunities for students and researchers. Its programs include online courses, seminars, workshops, undergraduate internships, graduate fellowships, and opportunities for graduate students and postdoctoral researchers. The center offers educational resources and supports initiatives for young scientists, including the American Biophysical Society’s Young Scientist Organization. Through partner institutions, lab groups, museum partnerships, and corporate affiliates, BioXFEL connects researchers with broader scientific and educational communities. Its website also features news, events, research resources, and information about proposals for research support and experiments at XFEL facilities.
