The Great Backyard Bird Count is an annual global event that invites people to watch, identify, and count birds over four days each February. Organized by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the National Audubon Society, and Birds Canada, it helps participants connect with nature while contributing observations that support scientists’ understanding and protection of bird populations. Anyone can take part, whether they spot one bird or hundreds, and counting can take as little as 15 minutes.
Participants submit checklists through eBird or Merlin, including observations recorded with eBird Mobile or on a computer. The event also offers guidance on identifying birds, entering data, sharing photos, and taking part in group counts or community birding activities. Participants can explore local results, view sightings appearing on a global map, and find or add community events.
Educators can access resources, and birders can learn through courses and trip reports. By bringing people together across countries and experience levels, the Great Backyard Bird Count makes birdwatching accessible and turns individual sightings into a shared contribution to conservation
