BirdEyes is a science and creative centre at the University of Groningen that investigates ecological change through the movements and lives of birds. Based in Leeuwarden, it brings together expertise from the University’s Faculties of Science & Engineering and Campus Fryslân, with links to the Rudolph Agricola School for Sustainable Development. The centre uses data from transmitters and other tracking technologies, combined with wider sources of information, to understand how birds respond to environmental conditions and climate change.

Its work includes research on migratory routes, coastal and meadow birds, wetlands, farmland, and bird survival. Projects explore topics such as godwit chick survival, bird communication, and climate resilience along the East Atlantic Flyway. BirdEyes also shares findings through publications, public-facing storytelling, exhibitions, events, and collaborative activities.

It connects ecologists with people from fields including farming, journalism, the arts, education, business, and social science, helping research engage with wider societal issues. The centre supports researchers, particularly PhD students and postdoctoral scholars, through teaching and summer schools, and works with partner institutions on research and outreach
