About Bishop Museum
Bishop Museum, founded in 1889 by Charles Reed Bishop, is a renowned cultural and natural history institution in the Pacific. The museum was established as a tribute to Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, the last descendant of the royal Kamehameha family, to house her extensive collection of Hawaiian objects and royal family heirlooms. Today, Bishop Museum has expanded to include millions of objects, documents, and photographs related to Hawai‘i and other Pacific island cultures.
It features magnificent Polynesian and Hawaiian Halls, which were built on the original Kamehameha Schools for Boys campus. With one of the largest natural history specimen collections in the world, the museum is recognized worldwide for its cultural collections, research projects, consulting services, and public educational programs. Bishop Museum's mission is to inspire visitors and the community by exploring, celebrating, and perpetuating the extraordinary history, culture, and environment of Hawaiʻi and the Pacific.
