BISS Bakeries Uganda
@bissbakeries.org
In order to create work and income in Uganda, BISS Bakeries was started in Uganda in 2014. In a Simple and Smart way, we train how to run a business in baking without electricity and running water. Simple in equipment, Smart in cost calculation and production. The independency of electricity and tap water makes BISS Bakeries suitable anywhere in Uganda, where there is a potential concentration of costumers. The program runs through four core activities: 1.Selection of new participants Together with partnering organizations, BISS selects majorly parents or care givers of children with disabilities and adults with disabilities. If a partnering organization takes care of the costs, they are free to select their beneficiaries. So far BISS has worked in Central, East Uganda and Karamoja. 2. Bakery and entrepreneurship training – the BISS incubator In the BISS Training Centers and via on-location trainings, BISS makes participants ready to run their own BISS Bakery. They learn all products, from pan-fried to oven-baked. Besides the practical baking, they learn sales (also practical), marketing, costing, packaging, record keeping, hygiene and other related subjects. 3. Supply of start-up-kits. BISS developed a start-up-kit including a locally produced oven using firewood in combination with briquettes. Besides the tools, it comes with all branding. So far BISS gave over 200 start-up-kits. Among those, 30+ with an oven. Over 500 people found themselves with an income through the program. Participants pay back the value of the start-up-kit while working. 4. follow-up. Remotely and through visits, a dedicated team coaches the bakeries to maintain quality, production standards and to be profitable. They also organize refresher courses, regional trainings, the BISS Booster program for expansion or sometimes restarting of bakeries.
