Bloembollenkeuringsdienst BKD

Stichting Bloembollenkeuringsdienst (BKD) is the Dutch inspection authority serving the flower bulb sector. Since 1923, its core role has been to inspect flower bulbs for quality and quarantine-related defects, offering growers and traders a trusted link in maintaining standards. BKD’s qualified inspectors conduct field inspections and planting inspections, including checks required for flower bulb lots and quality assessments that can help determine whether a lot qualifies for Class I.

The organization also collects planting samples, which are grown in its sample greenhouses or garden, and performs laboratory tests to detect viruses and other symptoms that may not be visible to the naked eye. Test results can affect a lot’s classification and export eligibility. BKD carries out import inspections and inspects bulbs destined for export outside the European Union before shipment.

Its broader services include registration, sampling, administrative checks, tariffs, and guidance on regulations, crop-specific quality requirements, and trade conditions. BKD also publishes statistics on cultivated bulb areas and provides information for businesses starting cultivation or trade
