Black Cemeteries by kinkofa is a public collection designed to help people find burial places, explore family histories, and preserve the stories of Black ancestors. It brings together cemetery records, ancestor profiles, funeral programs, obituaries, and other documents and records, with information drawn from family knowledge and community contributions. Visitors can search by a person’s name, place, county, or surname, and browse historically Black cemeteries, including churchyards, family plots, and community grounds.

The collection also helps users find nearby cemeteries, funeral homes, and churches through its map. People are invited to contribute names, dates, photographs, corrections, and memories, helping make records more useful for descendants and future researchers. Funeral programs and obituaries are treated as an important part of each story, connecting individuals with the families, churches, funeral homes, and burial places associated with them.

As a growing project within kinkofa, Black Cemeteries encourages families to share what they know and carry their ancestors’ stories forward
