The Black Independent Filmmakers Association (BIFA) is a Houston-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to supporting independent filmmakers and expanding opportunities for underrepresented voices in cinema. Through film screenings, industry dialogue, mentorship, and community engagement, BIFA helps filmmakers develop their craft and share their work with audiences. Its activities include an annual film festival, workshops and panels, youth mentorship programs, and community partnerships.
BIFAโs We Got Next program focuses on young people ages 16 to 18 and supports students from underserved communities as they pursue education and filmmaking interests. The program offers scholarships for tuition, books, and other educational expenses, alongside mentorship, career guidance, networking, and leadership development. It also works with colleges that have film programs to provide scholarships for their institutions to award.
BIFA encourages emerging filmmakers through training, hands-on learning, and access to industry opportunities. The organization also invites people to become members, donate, and support its events, including the BIFA Film Festival and Community Celebration.
