Black Sash is a highly respected, 66-year-old human rights organization in South Africa. Their mission is to advocate for social justice and the realization of socio-economic rights, with a focus on social security and protection for the most vulnerable to alleviate poverty and inequality. They firmly believe in open, transparent, and accountable governance by the state, corporations, and civil society in implementing socio-economic rights.

Black Sash currently operates three programs: rights information, education, and training; citizen-based monitoring; and advocacy in partnership/campaigns. They seek to empower individuals by providing them with information, monitoring government actions, and advocating for change through partnerships and campaigns. They are dedicated to promoting human dignity and addressing hunger and deprivation.

Notably, Black Sash is currently campaigning for permanent Basic Income Support for individuals aged 18 to 59 who have little to no income. They aim to address unemployment, poverty, and inequality, and are demanding that the government increase social assistance and work towards a universal basic income for all.
