Black Stag Tannery is a New Zealand tannery specialising in hand-crafted animal skins and hides, as well as European-style skull mounts. Based in Levin, the business uses traditional tanning methods combined with modern products and its own developed recipes and processes. Each skin is worked by hand, from fleshing through to the finished result, with careful hand-breaking intended to produce a flat, soft and supple hide with a crisp white underside.
The tannery processes deer, tahr, goat and sheep skins, preparing them for use as wall hangings or rugs. It also handles tahr hides, a service offered by only a small number of North Island tanneries. For Euro mounts, Black Stag Tannery can manage the skull preparation from cleaning and whitening through to mounting it on a locally produced shield.
Customers can arrange to drop off skins at the Levin tannery or send them by post. The business recommends getting in touch beforehand to discuss questions and arrangements, by phone or through Facebook.
