About Blackwell
Blackwell – the Arts & Crafts house is a historic visitor attraction operated by Lakeland Arts, a charity that inspires people through arts and heritage. Located near Bowness-on-Windermere in England’s Lake District, the Grade I listed house was designed by architect Mackay Hugh Baillie Scott in 1901 as a holiday home. It is one of the country’s finest examples of Arts & Crafts architecture, with many original features, including furniture, stained glass, carved stone, decorative tiles and wood panelling. Its gardens, designed by Thomas Mawson, offer views of Windermere and the Coniston Fells.
Visitors can explore the house, discover works by notable Arts & Crafts designers and makers, and experience a changing programme of contemporary craft exhibitions, talks and special events. Blackwell also offers house tours and group visits, including tours with nearby Broad Leys. Its Tea Room serves seasonal lunches, sandwiches and homemade cakes, with outdoor seating available. A craft shop complements the visit. Tickets, admission information and event details are available through the Blackwell website.
