Black Youth Helpline (BYH) is a Canadian, community-focused organization dedicated to supporting youth, families, schools and youth-serving organizations. Founded by volunteers in Winnipeg in 1992, it expanded in Ontario in 2003 and now serves communities nationwide. BYH works with all youth while offering culturally appropriate support that responds specifically to the needs of Black youth. Its approach emphasizes primary prevention, addressing underlying challenges early to help young people thrive and build successful lives.
The organization’s services include professional assessment, intervention, referrals and support for youth and families. It also works with schools and school boards to help students remain in the regular education system or connect with other educational opportunities. Programs described by participants include home tutoring, a Saturday School Program, mentoring and support with school-related concerns. BYH’s work is guided by three pillars: education, health and community, with a focus on nurturing wellbeing, learning and social connection. The helpline is available every day from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
