Blavatnik Awards for Young Scientists is a prestigious program that celebrates the innovative achievements of young postdoctoral and faculty scientists. Founded in 2007 by the Blavatnik Family Foundation in collaboration with the New York Academy of Sciences, these awards aim to identify and encourage promising young scientists in New York, New Jersey, or Connecticut. Unlike other awards that typically honor scientists later in their careers, the Blavatnik Awards focus on providing much-needed funding and recognition to early-career researchers.
By supporting these young scientists, the program helps them tackle complex scientific questions and find solutions to society's pressing problems. The program has expanded to include both regional and national awards in the United States, as well as awards in Israel and the United Kingdom. Since its inception, the Blavatnik Awards have received over 3,800 nominations and have recognized 443 young scientists from 52 countries.
The groundbreaking research of past winners and finalists has led to significant advancements, such as wireless charging for smart cars, DNA-sequencing smartphones, and disease-correcting gene editing techniques. Many past honorees have gone on to achieve remarkable career success, including receiving prestigious honors and launching technology companies. The Blavatnik Science Scholars community, comprising past honorees, fosters collaboration and promotes cutting-edge research.
The annual Blavatnik Science Symposium provides a platform for scholars to share their research with panel discussions, keynote speeches, and research updates. The Blavatnik Family Foundation, led by industrialist and philanthropist Len Blavatnik, is an active supporter of educational, scientific, cultural, and charitable institutions worldwide. With a focus on early-stage discovery, the foundation has contributed over $700 million to promote innovation in science, engineering, and technology.
