BLinG-Health

BLinG-Health, Inc. is a Baltimore-based nonprofit organization dedicated to improving health outcomes for Black girls and young women. Founded by Dr. Tara B. Blackshear, the organization grew from a culturally relevant, school-based, peer-led physical activity program and a recognition that participants needed support beyond fitness. Its approach views health holistically, encompassing physical, mental, and social well-being, and aims to empower young people to build healthier, more sustainable communities.

BLinG-Health offers free education, training, and mentoring for girls who want to lead group fitness and other sustainable physical activity programs at school. Its programming also considers school, environmental, and community health. For youth ages 12 to 18, the organization provides a junior group fitness certification. Through these opportunities, participants can develop leadership skills while supporting physical activity in their communities. BLinG-Health also welcomes donations to support its work and invites inquiries about research opportunities serving Black communities. The organization is supported by an advisory board and research team with experience in health, fitness, education, equity, and community research.
