Bloom Language

Bloom Language & Literacy Services is a private therapy practice in Beaufort, South Carolina, specializing in the assessment and treatment of dyslexia and other language-based learning disabilities. Founded by Barbara L. Helms, M.Ed., CCC-SLP, a pediatric speech-language pathologist and literacy specialist, the practice supports children’s individual language and literacy needs through research-based care.

Bloom offers comprehensive dyslexia and language testing, assessing skills such as reading, writing, spelling, listening, speaking, and handwriting. Families receive a written report describing the child’s background, observations, test results, diagnostic summary, and recommendations for home and school, including possible IEP or 504 accommodations.

Treatment uses the Orton-Gillingham approach, a systematic, multisensory method targeting reading, spelling, and writing. Individual lessons are tailored to each child’s strengths and needs, and typically take place twice weekly in one-to-one sessions. Families also receive individualized daily home exercises to help children apply developing skills beyond therapy. Services are available face-to-face in Beaufort and through online platforms.
