BlueHealth

BlueHealth is a pioneering research initiative aimed at understanding the impact of urban blue spaces—such as rivers, lakes, and coastal areas—on public health and well-being. Launched in January 2016 and concluding in December 2020, the project brought together a diverse range of stakeholders, including communities, private sector organizations, and policymakers, to examine how access to quality blue spaces can promote healthier living environments. By leveraging large-scale survey data and localized interventions, BlueHealth has produced evidence-based recommendations tailored to inform urban development and health strategies across Europe.

Funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 program, this interdisciplinary project emphasizes the importance of integrating health considerations into urban planning, ensuring that cities of the future are designed to enhance the quality of life for their residents. Through collaborations with institutions like the WHO Regional Office for Europe and the University of Exeter, BlueHealth continues to drive innovative solutions that address contemporary urban health challenges
