Basildon Natural History Society (BNHS) is a registered charity dedicated to preserving the natural history and wildlife of Basildon. Formed in 1968, the society has spent decades advocating for local wildlife conservation and helping people connect with the natural environment. It manages Marks Hill Nature Reserve on behalf of Essex Wildlife Trust, giving members opportunities to participate in practical conservation work, including habitat management and hedge laying.
BNHS brings members and the wider community together through meetings, guided walks, nature outings and other events. Activities have included wildflower walks, bat evenings, moth counts and visits to local sites such as Wallasea Island and Coalhouse Fort. The society also shares news and observations about wildlife, habitats and conservation work in the area, helping raise awareness of Basildon’s natural heritage.
People interested in local wildlife can learn about membership, upcoming events and ways to get involved through the society. BNHS provides a community-focused way to explore nature, support conservation and contribute to the care of an important local reserve.
