About Bodies and Structures
Bodies and Structures 2. 0 is a digital history project focused on deep-mapping modern East Asian history. Developed by historians David R.
Ambaras and Kate McDonald, the site brings together spatial stories and interactive tools to help visitors explore historical materials, places, and connections. Its collection includes seventeen modules, each presenting a spatial story, alongside a tag map for exploring concepts and a geotagged map for finding materials by location. A complete grid visualization helps users examine connections across the project, while the Lenses feature allows them to create their own visualizations.
The site also provides a guided tour, click-by-click instructions, troubleshooting information, and an account of what the project’s multivocal spatial history approach has contributed to research. Visitors can learn about contributors and advisory board members, as well as find guidance on citation, image permissions, licensing, and documentation. Bodies and Structures 2.
0 was made possible in part by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, and serves as a resource for exploring and interpreting modern East Asian history through spatial methods
